Choosing the right career

Start with houses 10, 6 and 11 in D1, then confirm in D9 and D10. 10th = field, 6th = type of work, 11th = gains.

Start with houses 10, 6 and 11

To do so, you'd have to analyse the 10th, the 6th and the 11th house. Why particularly these houses? The 10th house would reveal your profession. For example, you could be a doctor. The 6th house, however, is going to reveal the nature of your work. For example, you're a surgeon. You're a doctor, but you are a surgeon.

The 11th house determines how exactly you are going to make money. Naturally, it is linked to your job and the scale on which you work. For example, whether you are practising privately or working across different hospitals.

I'm going to demonstrate how to do this through an example and then share combinations for nine careers: law, medicine, finance, business, academics, government work, engineering, artistic careers and uncommon careers.

Answer the first three questions

How do we identify the career best suited for you? It starts with analysing the houses that I mentioned earlier. You analyse each house by answering some simple questions. The first is: who is the ruler of that house?

If you are unfamiliar with the basics, you can read my lesson on how to read a chart. The second question is: where is the ruler placed—in which house, sign and Nakshatra? The third is: where is that Nakshatra's planetary ruler placed—in which house, sign and Nakshatra? The third question is often neglected, so it is important to answer it too.

Let's take an example. In this person's chart, the ruler of the career house is Venus, placed in the fifth house in Sagittarius and Uttara Ashadha. Its planetary ruler is Sun, which is in the seventh house, in Aquarius and Shatabhisha. This shows how the first three questions are answered. I am not simply going to leave you with the answers; we will also interpret them.

Move from D1 to D9 and D10

We will also interpret these planetary positions to identify the career best suited to him. First, locate the main-chart house ruler in the Navamsha and note its house and sign. Then identify the ruler of that Navamsha sign and study its position in the main chart. The process moves from the main chart to the Navamsha and then back to the main chart. In this example, Venus is in the 1st house of the Navamsha in Sagittarius, the 9th sign.

That answers question four. Question five concerns the ruler of the Navamsha sign. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, which in the main chart is placed in the 11th house in Gemini and Punarvasu.

Questions six and seven are similar, but use the D10 rather than the D9. In the Dashamsha, Venus is in the fifth house in Virgo. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, which in the main chart is in the sixth house in Capricorn and Shravana.

Add aspects, occupants and divisional rulers

Question eight is about conjunctions and aspects. Is the planet ruling the house conjunct another planet, and which house does that planet rule? Does any planet aspect the house ruler? Also study the house in which the ruler is placed. In this example, Venus rules the 10th house and is placed in the fifth. It aspects the 11th house.

Question nine is simple: which planets occupy the house we are analysing, and which houses do they rule? We study the 10th house in the main chart, Navamsha and Dashamsha to see which planetary energies affect our interpretation.

The final question is how the house rulers are placed within the divisional charts. In the Navamsha, the 10th-house ruler is Mercury, so we study Mercury’s position within the D9. In the Dashamsha, the 10th house falls in Aquarius, co-ruled by Saturn and Rahu, so we study both planets within the D10. These questions provide a framework for understanding the meaning of a house.

Begin with the 10th-house ruler

Let's now interpret these combinations. The 10th-house ruler, Venus, is in the fifth house in Sagittarius and Uttara Ashadha. Venus in the fifth house, particularly eight places away, is a sign of an innovator. Uttara Ashadha indicates that this person is likely to do things on a large, global scale. Its planetary ruler is Sun, which is in the seventh house.

This indicates leadership potential, while Sun in the seventh is a sign that the person could be a public figure. Shatabhisha signifies to me that his professional image is likely to be secretive and confidential. Even as a public figure, he might have highly secretive plans.

Business, care and telecom network

Venus in the Navamsha is there in the 1st house in the sign of Sagittarius ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter in the 11th house is about businesses and so is the Nakshatra Punarvasu. Firstly, Venus's position there in the 1st house is a sign to me this person is very likely to be a public figure and is also likely to be famous and his work not only is innovative, which we found in the main chart, to me it's also likely this person is going to be a business person. As Venus in Sagittarius, Jupiter which is now the ruler of Sagittarius is in the eleventh house of money in the Nakshatra Punarvasu which belongs to a merchant. The Nakshatra Punarvasu is directly linked to the care industry, so his work is likely to target the care industry. Let's now look into the D10. I find Venus there in the fifth house.

Further signs of his work being highly innovative. In the D10 it is in Virgo ruled by Mercury which is there now in the 6th house in the main chart in the Nakshatra Shravana. You'd find this interesting. The Nakshatra Shravana belongs to the telecom sector. It belongs to all businesses which are in mass media, telecom being one of the prime examples. Is Venus conjunct or aspected by any planet? Yes, I find Venus and Ketu's association there, particularly in the divisional charts which to me is a sign this person's work can be linked to his past life but also futuristic as Ketu is placed there in the Nakshatra ruled by Rahu.

It does have an aspect of Saturn on it which simply is a sign to me this person's work may require a lot of hard work. We'll analyse Saturn in his chart as the sixth-house ruler and I also find Jupiter having an aspect on Venus in the main chart itself which is a sign, further signs that his work is likely to be in the business world as Jupiter is occupying the section of the sky belonging to a merchant. For question nine, there is no occupant to analyse because we do not find any planet there in the 10th house in all the three charts, the main Navamsha and the Dashamsha.

Synthesize the career direction

Question ten is very interesting. Mercury rules his career house in the Navamsha and is placed in Cancer in the eighth house. Cancer is ruled by Moon, which is also in the eighth house in Uttara Bhadrapada in the main chart. This suggests that his business can be centred around understanding consumer behaviour, linked to psychology or therapeutic in nature, as those businesses relate to Moon. In the Dashamsha, Saturn and Rahu rule his career house.

Saturn in the Dashamsha is placed there in the 3rd house in the sign of Cancer. Further signs of his work being therapeutic in nature as the ruler of the 10th house in the Navamsha and the Dashamsha are occupying the signs ruled by Moon. Rahu as I mentioned is also ruling the 10th house in the D10 chart and it's placed there in the 11th house which is a sign of ambition and also the person can be highly innovative and could also be running a business as it's occupying the 12th sign ruled by Jupiter.

Jupiter occupies a section of the sky that belongs to a merchant and is in Punarvasu, so the person's work is likely to be on a large scale. We have found an innovator who is likely to work on a large scale, be a public figure and show leadership potential. His professional personality could be secretive and his work futuristic because Shatabhisha is ruled by Rahu. Sun's position in Shatabhisha accounts for the secrecy. He is also likely to be self-made, which is a point I should have made at the beginning.

Venus rules not only his tenth house but also the third, which to me is a sign of a self-made business person. We have repeatedly found combinations linking his work to business, particularly mass media, telecommunications, care and convenience. I connect this with convenience because Uttara Bhadrapada is strongly linked to a lack of physical mobility. Perhaps his business not only provides care but makes things convenient for people. That is what I see from his 10th house.

The sixth house and work

I'll reveal the identity of this person at the end. Let's now look at the 6th house. The 6th house in his chart is ruled by Saturn which is placed there in the 3rd house in the Nakshatra of Vishakha which is ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter further is there in the 11th house in Punarvasu. Saturn in Vishakha to me is a sign of a very ambitious person and a stubborn business person. Why am I linking him to business with Saturn? Saturn in his chart is also ruling the 7th house which is the house related to business and so is the 3rd house. The 3rd, 7th and the 11th house which I would also be sharing later are houses related to businesses. Since Saturn is there in Vishakha he's going to be a very stubborn person, someone who's not going to easily give up and may also possess a very exacting nature. Vishakha is one of the most ambitious Nakshatras.

I also find since Saturn is occupying the Nakshatra ruled by Jupiter he'll be blessed with patience and wisdom. He's likely to also be running a large-scale business particularly in the healthcare sector or the care industry as Saturn is occupying the Nakshatra ruled by Jupiter which is in Punarvasu firstly and then business is likely to be on a large scale as Jupiter is there in the 11th house. Saturn in the Navamsha is there in the 7th house in the sign of Gemini. He's likely to be in business once again as the 7th house and the sign of Gemini relate to businesses. The sign of Gemini is ruled by Mercury which is placed in the main chart in the 6th house in the Nakshatra of Shravana which once again is linking his business to the field of mass media and to the telecom sector. I'm going to study its position there in the D10 chart where I find Saturn in the 3rd house in the sign of Cancer.

Cancer is ruled by Moon, which is in the eighth house in Uttara Bhadrapada. This provides further signs that his business relates to care and convenience. Jupiter aspects Saturn, linking the work to business, while Rahu's influence can make it futuristic. From the third house, Saturn aspects the fifth and ninth houses, both related to education. Saturn's influence could indicate that he found education difficult to pursue. He gave up his bachelor's degree in the first year whilst going through Saturn Antardasha.

This is a clue to the person's identity. Across the three charts, I find Mercury in the sixth house in D1 and Mars there in D9. Mercury provides further signs that his work can be in business because it naturally signifies business. Mars indicates highly technical and engineering-related work. A technical business related to Shravana is the telecom sector. In D9, Venus rules the seventh house and is placed in the first house in Sagittarius, which makes him a public figure in my view. Venus in the fifth house in Virgo in the Dashamsha is a sign of an innovator.

The 6th-house analysis suggests that this person would be very ambitious, very stubborn and would never give up because Saturn rules the 6th and 7th houses and occupies Vishakha in the 3rd. Saturn also gives patience and wisdom, so the person would build patiently without giving up. Jupiter in Punarvasu in the 11th suggests a large-scale business that could provide care or convenience, while Mercury in Shravana links the business to mass media or telecommunications.

The eleventh house, income and scale

Let's now study the 11th house. The 11th-house analysis becomes very interesting, as Mercury rules both money-related houses and is placed in the 6th house in Shravana. Shravana's planetary ruler is Moon, which is in the 8th house in Uttara Bhadrapada. Mercury rules the two houses related to money and is a significant factor in business. Its position in Shravana clearly links the business to mass media or telecommunications and to doing things on a large scale. Since Shravana is ruled by Moon, the work can also be in care and convenience within those sectors. Mercury in the Navamsha again occupies a sign ruled by Moon.

I draw the same conclusion. Mercury's Navamsha position also belongs to someone who understands consumer behaviour and what people want. In the Dashamsha, Mercury occupies the twelfth house in Aries, ruled by Mars. Mars is in the ninth house in Ashwini. The twelfth house, ninth house and Ashwini show that this person's business could be large-scale and international.

Jupiter's presence in the house of money in both the main chart and Dashamsha indicates the ability to run a large-scale business. In the Navamsha, Venus rules the house of money and is placed in the first house in Sagittarius, again indicating a public figure. Jupiter rules the 11th house in the Dashamsha and is also placed there, showing the capacity to run a large-scale business. The 11th-house analysis therefore points to a large-scale business in mass media or telecommunications, related to care, convenience and perhaps social welfare.

Steve Jobs and the method

He appears to have a great understanding of consumer behaviour and an international business. This chart belongs to Steve Jobs. How is his business linked to the telecom sector? The iPhone was the flagship product he launched, and it is naturally about linking people. My lesson on Shravana explains exactly why an iPhone is linked to that Nakshatra. Time and again, I found combinations which revealed that his business could be Shravana-related because Mercury occupies this section of the sky. His business was international and large-scale; he was secretive and also a public figure.

I have run through the highlights of his analysis. We now come to the main topic: combinations that belong to specific careers. The methodology is to look for links between the 6th, 10th and 11th houses and certain planets, signs and Nakshatras. In combination, they might reveal which career is best suited for you. We consider whether the planets rule or occupy these houses, and whether the house rulers occupy particular signs or Nakshatras. Law is the first group.
