Civil service in vedic astrology
In some economies, government work has many benefits and is a strong aspiration. Sun and Saturn are directly linked to it. Sun can place you in a position of power, including the power to penalise people, such as a tax officer or traffic policeman. Saturn places you mainly in public service, such as a nurse in a government hospital. Mars can centre the work on maintaining law and order. Jupiter can make it ministerial, policy-based, judicial or related to education or travel. Venus can make it ministerial but centred on culture, art and music.
When Mercury is involved, you could work for the government as a spokesperson, planner or organiser. With Moon, you might find yourself in a comfortable government position, similar to the one once occupied by the Queen in the United Kingdom. With Rahu, you could be a government official for a foreign country; foreign officials are Rahu-related in my view. With Ketu, the work can centre on espionage.
Career houses and public responsibility
Among the houses, I look at the sixth for public service and Saturn-related government professions, and the tenth for positions of power.
The distinction between Sun and Saturn is useful here. Sun describes the authority to make or enforce decisions, while Saturn describes public service. I would read those themes through the career-house rulers to understand the responsibility involved. The 10th describes the profession, the 6th the nature of the work and the 11th the income and scale.
Nakshatras and government roles
Among the Nakshatras, Pushya is closely linked to government work because it relates to policy-making.
Politicians and policy-makers are seen from Pushya. Uttara Ashadha can indicate government work on a large, national scale, perhaps centred on human rights, climate change or immigration. Uttara Phalguni can indicate partnerships with the private sector or law. Uttara Bhadrapada can bring high responsibility but low mobility—for example, a tax collector or government bus driver who remains in one place for a long time. Krittika links government work to education. Rohini can indicate responsibility for the trade of luxury goods and services or a caretaker position. Magha and Jyeshtha can bring the highest positions of power, such as mayor of a city. Shravana links work to law and order and international communications.
Anuradha can indicate a negotiator, peacemaker, diplomat or government collaborator. Bharani again relates to law, order and the judiciary. Ashlesha can indicate secret services, while Revati can indicate transport or government advisory. Among the signs, I look at Leo because it is ruled by Sun, and Capricorn because it is ruled by Saturn. Along with the planets, houses and Nakshatras already discussed, these signs indicate government work.
