Introduction

What is your natural duty from a career point of view? That can be seen in your birth chart from the 6th and the 10th house.

Why sixth and tenth houses matter

Why these two houses particularly? These two houses are directly linked to actions we have to perform to fulfill our responsibility at work, the 6th and the 10th house. So we'll get to these two houses but I'd like to share some mythology, ancient Vedic mythology with you.

Begin with the learned category

On the basis of this mythology, the society was divided into four varnas or categories. The first one was for Brahmins, the learned category. In my vocational framework, this category belongs to teachers, mentors, trainers, educators, philosophers, advisors, consultants, counsellors, basically anyone who's guiding us. These labels are reported as my vocational archetypes, not inherited caste, hierarchy or personal worth.

Courage and leadership category

The second one was for Kshatriyas who are known to display courage, determination, leadership and therefore soldiers, the ones who are in sports, political figures, police officers, administrators and lawyers also fall in this category of Kshatriyas.

Merchant category

The third varna or category was that of the merchants, Vaishyas. So anyone who's an entrepreneur or a business advisor or a financial consultant can belong to this category. So anyone involved in any kind of business basically.

Service category

The fourth category belonged to Shudras, service providers. So caretakers, cleaners, assistants etc belong to this category. The idea was the society will remain balanced if there are sufficient number of people fulfilling their duty.

Keep the Bhagavad Gita frame intact

The source paraphrases Bhagavad Gita 18.46-18.47 as saying it's much better to fulfill your natural duty even if you're doing it imperfectly than to fulfill someone else's duty perhaps perfectly. So it's much better to stick to your own natural duty and by doing so you're worshipping the creator of this creation. It then paraphrases Bhagavad Gita 18.48: that all work that we do, all kinds of work, all kinds of duty we are meant to perform, there's always going to be something imperfect with them.

Just like the flame of fire will always have smoke associated with it. So there's no such thing as perfect work. No work is perfect; it must agree with you if you feel it is your natural duty.

Modern categories and full table

So I'd like to also introduce three other categories of varnas in the discussion which are relevant in the modern world. The first one belonging to researchers, the second one belonging to artists and the last one are the ones who don't conform to any societal norms. The source table contains the first four main categories and the three further add-ons just described. Corresponding to them are Nakshatras and planets. This is how the method links Vedic mythology to Vedic astrology.

The last three are my modern additions, not traditional varnas.

Two house rulers

For example Sun and Mars, they belong to the category of a Kshatriya, a warrior basically. So how do you identify which is your natural duty? Study the sixth and the tenth house in your birth chart, identify their rulers and see where they are placed.

If for example the ruler of the sixth and the tenth house happens to be Venus and Jupiter for example, then your natural duty would be more linked to the learned class and if you also have a strong influence of Purva Ashadha, Purva Phalguni or Purva Bhadrapada or Krittika, all these four constellations that belong to the learned class and therefore your natural duty would be more linked to the learned class. So the entire chart has to be analysed but you can narrow down your analysis by only looking at the planets placed there in the sixth and the tenth house, starting from the rulers of the sixth and the tenth house.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's chart

The worked example begins with the chart's vocational-category column. He has several chart points in Punarvasu corresponding to the merchant category so he could be involved in business. I also find elements of him being a bit of a nonconformist and someone who might be an artist of some kind. Now we don't have to look at all of them. I'd earlier mentioned we can narrow down our analysis. We only have to look at the sixth and the tenth house.

The sixth house in this chart is ruled by Mars and Mars is in Mrigashirsha. Together I see a combination of a Kshatriya, someone who has to exhibit courage and determination, perhaps physical strength and the field is more artistic in nature. Mrigashirsha belongs to the creative category and Jupiter rules the tenth house. It is in the fifth in Vishakha. The individual might be an inspiration to people around oneself in the art and entertainment sector as Jupiter is in the fifth house and the profession the person might choose can be something uncommon as Vishakha belongs to the source table's nonconforming category.

Bodybuilding, display and inspiration

How about him now? His official biography confirms bodybuilding, emigration to America in 1968 and acting. The source describes that early work as extracting and refining his body. The source uses a diamond as an illustration. So the extraction of the diamond, the mining of the diamond, the polishing, the cutting of the diamond to make sure the diamond maximizes its brilliance is linked to this constellation. In his case the Mars-linked diamond was his body.

Mars is in Mrigashirsha in the twelfth house, which the source describes as a foreign place. Why did he do that? It was for public display, which the source links with the fifth house and eventually with the passage of time he has been seen as a motivational figure of some kind that agrees with Jupiter's rulership of the tenth. Now from the rulers of the sixth and the tenth house I see his natural duty was to inspire people, Jupiter, the tenth-house ruler, in the fifth, in an entertaining manner.

His duty was also about extracting, refining, purifying and exhibiting physical strength, Mars in Mrigashirsha is in that foreign-place twelfth house.

Career activity and natural duty

Now if you look at his chart in totality he also has a very strong Punarvasu influence. So he did spend a lot of his time investing in real estate. Punarvasu is directly linked to that. Punarvasu is also about looking after the society. He has also motivated people and publicly discussed fitness, health and mental health, while disclaiming clinical expertise. Sun in his chart is in Pushya which is linking his career to politics but Sun is not directly linked to the sixth or the tenth house.

I link Sun in Pushya with politics but not natural duty; that is my interpretation, not a factual judgment.

Career changes across Dashas

Furthermore Pushya is ruled by Saturn. Saturn is in Ashlesha. I read Saturn in Ashlesha as political entanglement; a chart cannot establish that experience. So the source proposes that the rulers of the sixth and the tenth house can help you read your natural duty. I'd like to know who is ruling the sixth and the tenth house in your birth chart. In which Nakshatras are they placed? Perhaps I can answer the question for you.

What is your natural duty from a career point of view? And it might be a good idea to continue to follow that natural duty. Treat it as reflection alongside skills, training, health and circumstances—not a profession assignment. Now I just want to also clarify one more thing and that is that the ruler of the tenth house in his birth chart was in the eighth house from the tenth house and that's a sign that his career was meant to go through several changes.
