What Jupiter Represents in Your Birth Chart

Introduction

What does Jupiter represent in our chart? Jupiter represents wisdom: a way of looking at things more philosophically.

For example, if you have had a setback and you’re feeling devastated by that setback—a job loss, a break in a relationship, anything of that kind—you might feel devastated. But as time passes, you might begin to see something positive in that too. That inherent optimism, I believe, comes from Jupiter. You might feel, “This setback is going to help me grow as a human being.” So that perspective comes from Jupiter.

Wisdom and the Larger Perspective

That higher-level understanding, in my view, comes from Jupiter, including an interest in theology and spirituality. Jupiter is going to bestow upon us the quality to go beyond mind and intellect. So we are going beyond emotions and logic when we’re looking at the big picture.

We see wars breaking out around the world. One view is, “This is devastating. Why is God creating these circumstances? Why is the world burning?” Perhaps if you think about it a bit more deeply, you might feel that perhaps destruction is also a necessary part of the next creation.

So you might be able to see there’s a bigger plan behind how things function in our society. Every action leads to an equal and opposite reaction, and that is what’s transpiring in society. That awareness, that understanding, that perspective comes from Jupiter.

Learning, Teachers, Ethics and Fairness

Jupiter will also create learning opportunities for us and determine the kind of teachers we might run into. Later in our life, it shapes our ability to share what we have learned. If, for example, Jupiter is in the sign of Gemini, your ability to explain what you’ve learned might be one of your strengths.

Jupiter also helps us understand society as a whole, but there’s a role everyone has to play. If you are a police inspector, your role is to protect society. You’re not going to cross the boundaries of law. You’re not going to abuse your authority. That awareness, that knowledge, that wisdom comes from Jupiter.

Every initiative we see in our society centered around doing the right thing—like corporate social responsibility, maintaining high ethical standards, any kind of public dealing, or the principle of fairness and equality—all of them, in my view, originate from Jupiter.

Governance, Policy and Foreign Relations

Jupiter is also linked to governance. Everything in our society that keeps it running properly, in sync with the law of the country, also originates from Jupiter. All policies linked to transport, healthcare, the economy, foreign relations and diplomacy are originating from Jupiter.

There is an understanding that society cannot function only on the basis of products and services originating from the country. The country needs to have foreign relations. It needs to import certain goods and services that are available at a better price than when they are produced in our country. So that awareness, that thoughtfulness, comes from Jupiter. You end up making an informed decision.

Growth, Religion and Education

Since I’ve spoken about foreign relations, a related theme is growth. Jupiter could help us run into growth opportunities, whether it’s promotion at work.

One example I always cite is that when Jupiter’s Mahadasha was about to begin in the birth chart of Mr. Donald Trump, he became the president for the first time.

So recognition in society, growth opportunities, foreign travel and exposure to different cultures, in my view, are also arranged by Jupiter.

Jupiter is linked directly to our understanding of religion and the faith we have in whomever we consider God. That inherent optimism comes from that. For example, you’re stuck in the middle of the night in the forest. That inherent belief that, “You know what, this is temporary. I’m very sure I’ll be able to find my way out somehow,” comes from Jupiter too.

Jupiter is linked entirely to the education sector. Therefore, all educational institutes and charitable organizations are linked to Jupiter. I had mentioned that Jupiter is about doing the right thing, and by extension, worldwide organizations like the United Nations are linked to it. In academics, research labs are also linked to Jupiter.

Tara, Moon and Mercury

There’s an interesting mythological tale behind Jupiter. Jupiter’s wife, Tara, left Jupiter and went along with Moon. Moon and Tara, the wife of Jupiter, gave birth to Mercury. But Jupiter showed maturity. When Tara returned to Jupiter, Jupiter guided Mercury and raised Mercury as his son.

The story here is that Mercury is like the child of Jupiter. In other words, intellect is shaped by wisdom. This is the mythological tale which depicts the relationship between these qualities that we have of intellect and wisdom.

I’d like to take practical examples to explain how Jupiter’s energy manifests in different Nakshatras.

Martin Luther King Jr.: Jupiter in Ashwini

The first example is Martin Luther King Jr. In his case, I find Jupiter in the first house in the Nakshatra of Ashwini. How do you analyze this position? Firstly, look at the role Ashwini plays in society.

Ashwini is about fighting for people. That’s the theme of the constellation of Ashwini. It’s about providing assistance. Now he’s an assistance provider. His understanding of that assistance is much bigger. He’s likely to fight the big fight, and that’s what he did. He fought for equality.

If you study Ashwini’s ruler, Ketu in his chart falls in the constellation of Anuradha. In my view, Ketu’s position in your chart is your connection to your previous life. A Ketu-in-Anuradha-like individual could have been involved in social-welfare activities, and possibly he was carrying that forward from his past life. In this life, Jupiter helped him achieve his objectives.

The other interesting thing about him is that he has Jupiter in the sign of Gemini. Now this is how you read a chart. Gemini’s ruler, Mercury, in his case is in the constellation of Shravana. This explains his excellent oratory skills. Mercury is shaping our communication skills, and when it goes to the Nakshatra of Shravana, he is blessed with thoughtfulness. When Jupiter also comes into the picture, the individual becomes like a motivational speaker of some kind.

Maria Montessori: Wisdom Applied to Education

The other example I’d like to take is Maria Montessori. Perhaps you haven’t heard of her, but I’m very sure you’ve come across Montessori education or Montessori schools. They are dedicated to her work.

In her case, I find Jupiter in the constellation of Mrigashira. This is a sign that she would have had a very refined understanding of whatever she wanted to achieve.

What was her objective? Mrigashira’s ruler, Mars, is in Punarvasu, and the sign of Gemini is ruled by Mercury, which is in Hasta. Hasta and Punarvasu are both directly linked to our maternal side. So her objective was to look after society, and she had the wisdom to carry out this aspiration when Jupiter was there.

Jupiter’s position alone isn’t suggesting her link to children’s education. It’s not explained by Jupiter; it’s explained by Sun. Sun in her chart is in the constellation of Uttara Phalguni. Uttara Phalguni is directly linked to a career linked to young children.

So Jupiter gave her the wisdom, the natural maternal qualities and also an entrepreneurial nature. Punarvasu and Hasta are linked to the caste of a merchant. She had the clarity of thinking to execute her entrepreneurial dreams linked to education.

Abraham Lincoln: Governance and Reform

The other example I’d like to share is Abraham Lincoln. I’ve mentioned Jupiter’s link to governance. In his case, I find Jupiter in the Nakshatra of Purva Bhadrapada. The constellation is involved with revolutionary thinking. That’s what he was known for.

Jupiter further in his Navamsa is in the sign of Cancer, ruled by Moon. Moon is in Uttara Ashadha. Moon’s sign ruler, Saturn, is in Anuradha. All of this put together is a sign that he was very driven towards serving society. Moon in Uttara Ashadha and Saturn in Anuradha are indications of that.

That was the environment in which his Jupiter energy manifested in Purva Bhadrapada. No matter what inspired him, whether it was the unification of the USA or a personal aspiration to abolish slavery, that is a revolutionary contribution he made to society because of Jupiter’s position in Purva Bhadrapada.

Through these examples and the description of Jupiter, we can see how its energy manifests differently in different Nakshatras.
