No Birth Time? How to Still Read Your Birth Chart

Introduction

So what do you do if you don't know your time of birth at all? You've asked around your family members—mother, father, siblings, etc. They don't really have a clue whether you were born in the morning, late afternoon or late evening. So you have absolutely no clue: what can you do under those circumstances? My suggestion is you place your time of birth as 12 noon. Noon is only a starting placeholder. This is just the beginning.

Start with a 12 noon chart

You can still read this chart calculated based on 12 noon. This assumes the correct birth date and place; enter noon in the correct local time zone.

Readable planetary positions

The good news here is that the Moon is the main planet likely to change its sign or Nakshatra position in a 24-hour period. The Moon moves roughly one Nakshatra per day and therefore is the most time-sensitive planet.

The other planets, their sign positions and their Nakshatra positions can usually still be read provisionally. Check both ends of the day for any planet near a sign or Nakshatra boundary.

Why houses and Dashas wait

The only issue area here is that you cannot rely on the house positions, which are very important, and you cannot also rely on the Dasha system used to interpret life events as per Vedic astrology. So now you have to go beyond the generic analysis of simply understanding planet, sign and Nakshatra positions.

For example, you've placed your time of birth as 12 noon and identified Saturn in Punarvasu in the sign of Gemini. You can still draw some conclusions from it, but you don't exactly know what role that planet is playing in your chart because the house positions are unreliable. Noon is a placeholder; placements are provisional; houses and Dasha dates are unreliable until tested.

Compare twelve ascendants

To identify the house position now, there is another good news that I have for you. Based on Vedic astrology, we only have twelve possible Ascendant options. The 24-hour period can be broken down into roughly two hours each, but rising times vary by sign and latitude.

So it's not as if there are an infinite number of possibilities and we cannot analyse all of them. There are only a limited number of options, and there are twelve of them. Your birth chart can fall under twelve different Ascendants, and based on each Ascendant planets are going to be assigned different roles.

Use career first

A certain planet is going to be responsible for your career, and that's going to be the ruler of the 10th house. So under these circumstances, of all the twelve options, try to match your career with the ruler of the 10th house.

If, for example, you're an engineer, it's likely the ruler of the 10th house is Mars or Mars has a strong influence on the 10th house. If you're working in the government sector, Sun or Saturn's influence on the 10th house is very likely as an illustration. If your work is very creative in nature, then Venus's influence. These are illustrations, not rules. Here you can hopefully narrow the twelve options to a handful.

Test dated life events

Now the next thing you can do is make a list of all life events: time of marriage, foreign travel, higher education, job promotion and other important events. Take the specific dates of all important events and try to match them to the recalculated Dasha table for every candidate time.

I know it's a time-consuming analysis, but it's very useful. Compare several dated events and misses; the result is a working option, not proof.

Narrow the birth-time window

I used this method for Narendra Modi's chart, whose time of birth was in doubt; there were three different options, and I found one option that made the most sense—not a verified civil birth time.

I think for that you'll need to understand the basics of how to read the Dasha table. The point I want to make here is that you can still read your chart even if you're unable to identify your exact time of birth. Based on your career, you may narrow the window from 24 hours to about six hours; based on recalculated Dashas, you can attempt a working time. It does not guarantee an exact birth time.
