Sidereal and tropical zodiac systems
Zodiac
How can your Sun sign be different in Vedic astrology? There is an 80% chance that you may find a different Sun sign in a Vedic astrology birth chart.
The reason is that Vedic astrology follows a sidereal zodiac system, whereas Western astrology follows a tropical system. In the calculation described here, the planetary positions are around 23 degrees behind the tropical positions.
A simple example of the shift
Example
If your Sun is at 7 degrees Capricorn in the tropical system, the Vedic position would be 14 degrees Sagittarius. If the Sun is at 29 degrees Gemini, however, moving it back by 23 degrees leaves it at 6 degrees Gemini, so the sign remains the same.
The difference applies to every planet
All planets
This difference does not apply only to the Sun. It applies to all planetary positions. The method of calculating planetary positions is therefore different in Vedic and Western astrology.
