What Moon Represents in Your Birth Chart

Introduction

Moon represents the mind. That’s the first thing. Where Moon is placed in your chart is going to determine how you are going to react to circumstances and, firstly, how you are going to perceive them.

If, for example, someone has walked in front of you and you get the impression that you were in the queue and the other person has broken the queue, you might perceive that as rude behavior. Then the next step is your reaction to that. Either you can confront the individual, or you can sit back and say, “Oh, you know what, these things happen in society.” You might get nervous or shy if you’re faced with new circumstances, or you might face new circumstances confidently. All of this is linked to the position of Moon.

The mind is the most important thing in therapeutic astrology. We perceive the world through the mind, and therefore, no matter how much you explore the mind and its behavior, it’s never going to be enough. But we can try through astrology to understand how you might end up thinking based on Moon’s position in your chart. Moon’s Nurturing Quality

The second thing Moon is linked to is its nurturing quality. Moon is described as the queen in the planetary kingdom. If Sun is the king, then Moon is the queen.

So a Moon-like individual—for example, if Moon in one’s chart is quite strong, or it’s in the first house or ruling the first house—may have these maternal qualities, these queen-like caretaking qualities. Moon is also going to determine how kind, courteous, warm and welcoming you are to people.

This includes your exchanges even with strangers that you come across in life. For example, you’re traveling in the metro and you see someone who probably needs the seat more than you. Are you going to stand up and offer the seat? Even if you’re not saying anything, there’s an emotional exchange that takes place. That, in my view, is driven by Moon.

Lord Soma, Reliance and Emotional Support

Moon is also considered to be the planetary form of Lord Soma. In the constellation of Mrigashira, which Lord Soma is ruling, it is said that Lord Soma is behind the extraction of the nectar of immortality. Other gods are relying on Lord Soma for that nectar.

So that reliance, in my view, is linked to how others might rely on you. Just like in a family you have the mother, and members of the family rely on the mother. When you are faced with difficult circumstances, you probably reach out to your mother for emotional support, most importantly.

Commerce, Public Relations and Care

Moon is also described as belonging to the caste of merchants. Therefore, a Moon-like person can understand that it’s a give-and-take world. If you are expecting something from someone, you’ll have to do something for that person.

A sense of morality in commerce, how to build public relations and how to grow your customer base if you are a business owner are linked to Moon. All businesses and careers in the healthcare industry, or anything to do with the care sector, are always going to be linked to Moon.

These are qualities that a Moon-like person might have. How might they manifest if Moon is placed in different houses, different signs and, most importantly, different Nakshatras? I would like to explain this with the help of three examples.

Florence Nightingale: Moon in Krittika

The first example is Florence Nightingale. I have spent considerable time explaining the maternal qualities of Moon. In the case of Florence Nightingale, Moon falls in the constellation of Krittika.

The mythology is that Lord Kartikeya was raised by six mothers, and therefore he inculcated the qualities of looking after people. A Krittika native would have a strong maternal side, particularly when Moon is there.

In the case of Florence Nightingale, not only is Moon in this constellation, even Sun is there too. Sun’s relationship with Moon suggests she could have her career linked to Moon and Krittika.

Moon falls in a sign ruled by Venus. Venus is in Ardra, so it’s a sign that she could be quite futuristic about how she went about looking after people. She is considered to be the mother of modern nursing. She was a bit of a reformer.

Then, in the Navamsa chart, I find Moon placed in the sign of Capricorn, suggesting she was quite service-oriented, particularly as Saturn in the main chart is in Revati.

Queen Victoria: Moon and the Material World

Queen Victoria not only has Moon in the first house in the constellation of Rohini; she also has Sun there. Her rising constellation is Rohini. Rohini is considered to be the most beautiful Nakshatra and is directly linked to large sums of money.

It’s linked to jewelry, gemstones and anything which is of very high value. Since she has such a strong Rohini influence in her chart, she was meant to live a life full of luxury and comfort. So here we are seeing another side of Moon.

The sign remains the same, the sign of Taurus, but in the case of Florence Nightingale, we are talking about Krittika, whereas Rohini is entirely different from Krittika. Rohini, incidentally, is all about experiencing life on a material plane—worldly pleasures, basically.

During her reign, England became the wealthiest nation in the world. The other interesting thing about her chart is that she has Jupiter in Dhanishta, which, in my view, leads to fame—massive fame. A person can be popular around the world. In fact, one planet-Nakshatra combination I believe is directly linked to fame is Jupiter in Dhanishta.

What happened in her case? When she entered Jupiter’s Antardasha in the year 1837, she became the queen and naturally was automatically known by a large number of people.

Friedrich Nietzsche: Moon in Jyeshtha

Another example is Friedrich Nietzsche, a revolutionary thinker. In his case, I find Moon placed in the constellation of Jyeshtha in the sign of Scorpio.

Here I want to dispel the commonly accepted notion that Moon is debilitated in the sign of Scorpio. I’m not contesting the fact that Moon is debilitated, but the effects of it. People generally say, “Oh, my Moon is debilitated, and therefore my Moon is weak and X, Y and Z is wrong in my chart because of that.” That is a wrong way of thinking, in my view.

Here’s an example who has a debilitated Moon, if you take only the sign, and who is a revolutionary thinker. Just like in the case of Karl Marx, he has Moon’s association with Rahu. Whenever Rahu is involved, individuals tend to challenge existing norms.

Whatever best I could understand about his philosophy, I think he promoted the idea that individuals must follow their own reasoning. They shouldn’t simply follow existing social norms just for the sake of following them. They must reason. They must not fall prey to herd mentality.

When Moon is in Jyeshtha, the individual can be an opinion leader, particularly if Jyeshtha’s ruler Mercury is in Hasta. Mercury is strong in the constellation of Hasta. So I think whatever his philosophies might have been, they would have been quite logical, as Mercury is in such a strong position.

Hardship, Endurance and Balance

I also read about him that he promoted the philosophy of wishing that people go through hardships. His idea was that people might actually be lucky if they get to experience hardships, because when they endure the hardship, they would have a very strong mind.

There’s some logic to that. When we go through hardships and we overcome our hardships, we become mentally much stronger. That got me thinking: if you draw a parallel to the Bhagavad Gita, the Bhagavad Gita teaches you the concept of indifference.

No matter if you have extraordinary success or you are going through grave circumstances on a material plane, you must maintain a sense of balance, a sense of indifference. So both Friedrich Nietzsche and what I learned from the Bhagavad Gita are possibly talking about how to condition the mind better. In his case, he’s referring to strengthening the mind through endurance through difficult circumstances.

In the case of the Bhagavad Gita, it’s about evolving beyond the realm of mind and seeing good and bad with an equal eye.
