Why Steffi Graf's chart is interesting

When you first study Steffi Graf's birth chart, it is not immediately apparent that she is a tennis player. That makes it an interesting chart through which to learn lessons that you can apply when reading your own birth chart.

Career houses in the main chart

In the main chart, Jupiter rules the house linked to her career and is placed in the 4th house. I am not entirely sure that this combination suggests a tennis player.

Mars rules the 6th and 11th houses. The 6th, 10th and 11th are the three important career houses to analyse, starting with where their rulers are placed.

Mars is in the 6th house in Anuradha. At this point, I am 50-50: she could be a tennis player, but she could also be a lawyer. Anuradha's ruler, Saturn, is in the 11th house in Ashwini.

First impression: social welfare

I actually see someone who could be a social activist of some kind. Jupiter in the 4th house also links her career to the social welfare sector.

In the Navamsa chart, the Moon and Saturn are in the 10th house. So far, I am seeing someone involved in social welfare activities.

Career in sport

Things become clearer in the Dashamsha chart, where Mars rules the house linked to her career. If I reverse engineer the chart and consider which planets are linked to a tennis career, I would choose Mars and Saturn.

Mars provides passion, drive and technical skill. Saturn provides the discipline and organisational ability that are also required.

Mars rules her career house in the Dashamsha and is in the 5th house. Careers in sport are seen from the 5th house, so the ruler of the 10th in the 5th directly links her career to tennis.

Mars and Saturn: drive and discipline

For tennis, or any sporting career, Mars and Saturn need to have a strong influence on the houses linked to the career. In Graf's main chart, Mars is in Anuradha, a Nakshatra ruled by Saturn.

Mars rules the career house in the Dashamsha while expressing its energy in Saturn's environment. This connects both planets to her career.

Career change in the Dashamsha

In the D10 chart, Jupiter is in the 12th house and Mars is in the 5th house, which is the 8th house from the 10th. These are strong indications of career change.

A career change is indicated when the rulers of career-related houses are in the 5th house, which is the 8th from the 10th, or in the 12th house. Jupiter ruling the 10th house and being placed in the 12th in the Dashamsha is therefore a strong indication of career change.

Rahu, Jupiter, retirement and the foundation

Throughout Rahu's Mahadasha, she was building her tennis career. When she entered Jupiter's Mahadasha, however, she began to have problems with that career: first one knee problem, then another, followed by a back problem. She eventually retired in 1999.

Since then, she has been running a social welfare organisation called Children for Tomorrow and advocating for the mental health of children who have experienced trauma. She has also been involved in counselling refugee children.

She fulfilled her aspiration to become a tennis player during Rahu's period, because Rahu's Mahadasha is about fulfilling our desires. Her life's purpose, however, was more about social welfare. When Jupiter's Mahadasha began, that transition occurred: her career changed, and she began working full time on the foundation with her partner.

Marriage and career

The ruler of the house linked to marriage and the ruler of the career house are the same. This shows two things. First, she married someone who was also a tennis player, so the partner can come from the same line of work. Second, she now works with her husband, Andre Agassi, on these social welfare initiatives.

The ruler of the marriage house in the Navamsa is Mars, so she was meant to be with a Mars-in-Anuradha-like person. If Mars in Anuradha led her to build a career in tennis, her partner could also have been in tennis.

Years of practice

With Mars in Anuradha and Anuradha's ruler Saturn in Ashwini, I see tennis skills driven by years of practice and discipline.

Had Mars been in Ashwini, I think she could have been known for the fastest serve. In her case, things would instead have happened automatically on court: her body reacted from years of practice. That is what Mars and Saturn do.

Moon, Mercury and Venus

What kind of character does she have? The Moon and Mercury are in Rohini, while Venus is in Bharani. Venus also rules the 1st house in the Navamsa chart. I think she was naturally blessed with charm and charisma.

The fourth-house ruler and life abroad

The ruler of the 4th house is Mercury, which is in the 12th house. This is a strong indication that she was meant to build her life permanently in a foreign place.

Marriage and childbirth

She married in October 2001. It was not a sudden development because she was already dating her partner, and she also gave birth in the same month.

At that time, she was going through Venus's Pratyantardasha. Venus's period is always a good time for marriage.

Venus rules the 5th house in her main chart, and the 5th house is linked to childbirth. It is therefore not surprising that she gave birth during the Dasha of the ruler of the 5th house. Venus also signifies a new beginning of some kind.

Purpose in the divisional charts

Her chart is not straightforward. At first glance, it does not occur to you that she is a tennis player. As you explore the divisional charts, however, you begin to see that she could have a very successful career in tennis or the sporting world.

More than that, I think her life's journey and purpose were meant to be in social welfare.
