What a newspaper horoscope is based on

Should you read your horoscope in the newspaper? The short answer is yes. There's nothing wrong with it, but the horoscope is based mainly on the position of the Sun at the time of your birth.
For example, if you were born in November, you're very likely to read the horoscope next to Scorpio. At the time of the recording, the Sun was transiting Gemini. A horoscope can be compiled from that Sun-sign position and the current transit, but that is not the complete picture.
Why the full birth chart matters

There are eight other planets, and they are also placed in different signs in your birth chart. The entire birth chart therefore needs to be read.
If you are following Vedic astrology, there are also the Nakshatras. Outside the 12 zodiac signs, there are 27 Nakshatras. If you're trying to understand what astrology says about you, it might be a good idea to read the entire birth chart rather than only the newspaper horoscope.
