The birth chart is the picture of the sky taken at the time you were born from the place of your birth. And since the planets are always moving, any change in time means that the positions of the planets change and more importantly your birth chart changes. But how much does the birth chart really change with respect to time, let’s have a closer look:
The common perception about the birth time is that even a small change in time of birth will dramatically change your birth chart. Well, the myth is true but what is also true is that it applies to only a small percentage of people, and in most cases, you have some leeway with your time of birth, especially when it comes to analyzing your personality through astrology. Let’s talk about it in more detail.
The single most important calculation in your birth chart is that of the rising sign, which is also called the ascendant. The ascendant is the starting point and irrespective of whether you use Vedic astrology or Western, the ascendant determines the first house of your birth chart. The other houses in your birth are calculated using the first house. And so if the ascendant is wrongly calculated; not only do the houses change but the whole meaning of the birth chart changes.
So the maximum possible leeway that you have with your time of birth is 2 hours. Why? Because it all depends on your ascendant, which changes every 2 hours. If your time of birth is incorrect by 2 hours or more then your birth chart will be incorrect. Earth takes 24 hours to rotate around its axis. In other words, it takes 24 hours for any given point (e.g. your place of birth) on Earth to travel the sky (12 zodiac signs). And if Earth covers 12 signs in 24 hours, it means it covers 1 sign in 2 hours. I hope this is clear.
Even though you have a maximum leeway of 2 hours, it is not evenly divided or unidirectional. Let me explain this through an example of Jenny, she was born 20th March 1992 at 7 20 pm in Berlin. This is how her birth chart looks like:
......now if you notice her ascendant is 18 degrees, Virgo. And since it has only 12 degrees to travel in the forward direction to change its sign, it will take = 2 hours x 12/30 = 48 minutes for the ascendant to change to the sign of Libra. Similarly, it has 18 degrees to travel in the backward direction to change its sign, and so it will = 2 hours x 18/30 = 1 hour 12 minutes for the ascendant to change to the sign of Leo. Do you see this how works? The final result is shown at the bottom of the above picture, I hope you were able to see this.
(based on the above example)
If her time of birth is between 6:08 pm – 8:08 pm then her ascendant will be Virgo. And the personality assessment based on her birth chart will be correct. But if her time of birth was just after 8:08 pm then her ascendant changes to Libra, and if it was just before 6:08 pm then her ascendant is Leo. So she needs to be a 100% sure that her time of birth is between 6:08 pm – 8:08 pm.
A word of caution: The personality assessment based on her birth chart will be accurate but the timing of life events predicted through astrology would off by ~ 6 months if the time of birth is incorrect by 1 hour (I will talk about this at the end)
In the above example, if her ascendant changes to Libra instead of Virgo then what was earlier the 1st house becomes the 12th house, the 2nd house becomes the 1st, the 3rd house becomes the 2nd house, and so on. Even though the shift of houses by one position may seem like a small change but the implications are quite dramatic. E.g. In some cases, if Saturn is wrongly calculated to be in the 7th house then it wrongly indicates a delay in marriage. Similarly, if Sun is wrongly calculated to be in the 10th house instead of the 11th then the meaning changes significantly and the same goes for the other planets - that is why a lot of stress is given to the time of birth.
Just start by what you know about your time of birth. Most of us at least know the time in the day we were born. So if you know that you were born sometime in the afternoon then pick 3 30 pm and go with it.
Let’s take Dan, for example, he was 12th July 1990 in Valencia and let’s take his time to be 3 30 pm because he remembers it was sometime in the afternoon. As per these details his ascendant is 10 degrees Libra. So, the maximum leeway he has with this time of 3 30 pm is 2 50 pm – 4 50 pm. Now he can read what his birth chart says about him. If the birth chart doesn’t make sense then he could choose a time just before 2 50 pm or a time just after 4 50 pm to see if those two make better sense. So basically we’ve covered the entire afternoon with 3 different times of birth to make sure we found his correct birth chart.
I know it can be a bit confusing if you don’t know your time of birth, you can send me an email at email@example.com and I’ll try to help you out.
No! all planets are constantly moving but the planet that changes significantly with a small change in time is Moon. So the position of the Moon becomes the second most important calculation after the ascendant. Here’s how much does the ascendant and the Moon change with a change of 1 hour in time.
|What changes in 1 hour||By how much|
|Planetary time periods||3 - 9 months|
And over the course of 24 hours even planets such as Sun, Mercury, and Venus begin to change their position quite significantly. But over a small duration of time such as 1 hour, it is the Ascendant and the Moon that are critical.
|What changes in 24 hours||By how much|
|Planetary time periods||6 - 18 years months|
Now planets such as Jupiter & Saturn are far from Earth and they appear to be moving the slowest. Jupiter stays in one sign for 1 year and Saturn stays in one sign for 2 ½ years. Just to put things in perspective, anyone born between 24th October 2017 – 24th Jan 2020 will have Saturn in the sign of Sagittarius. So the significance of the sign reduces considerably - the only thing that will matter is in which house will Saturn be placed and that depends on the ascendant.
So once again, everything boils down to your ascendant
Before I answer this question, I want to talk about planetary time periods because they determine life events such as marriage, rise in career/business etc. – all of which are indicators of similar life, isn’t it? Planetary time periods (you can read more about it here) are calculated entirely on the position of the Moon. So if the time of birth of two people differs by even 1 hour, the change in the position of the Moon is ~0.6 degree, which changes the time of life events by 3 – 9 months (did you see that in the table above), which is quite significant.
But what if two people were born at the exact same time then not only will the sequence of life events be similar but also their personalities. The major difference is in the behavior of Saturn, Rahu & Ketu in their birth charts, which is difficult to predict. Because Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu are karmic planets, Saturn is the keeper of karmas and its job is to give us what we deserve, Rahu forces us towards things that we couldn’t accomplish in our past-lives, and Ketu detaches us from everything we have achieved in our past lives. So I believe no two people lead the same life because of the sheer weight of karmas accumulated over many lives.
That’s it folks! I hope this article was useful for you. Please write to me if some sections were unclear or you just feel like saying hi. Thanks for reading.
